Hermeneutics in physics and theology

The mathematician argues incorrectly if he wants to measure God’s will with a compass, but the theologian is also wrong if he thinks that one can learn astronomy or chemistry from the Psalter.

Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov

Perhaps not everyone has heard the phrases hermeneutics in physics and theology. So let’s start with concepts. Hermeneutics (from the Greek. hermeneutikos – explaining, interpreting), a direction in philosophy that explores the theory and practice of interpretation, interpretation, understanding. For more information about hermeneutics, see cheat sheets on yaklass.ru

Theology (from the Greek theos – God and logos – teaching) – theology, the doctrine of God. It would seem, where is Physics here? And here’s the actual story.

Once a professor at the ETH Zurich asked his students this question. Is everything that exists created by God? One student boldly replied, “Yes, created by God.” “God created everything?” the professor asked. “Yes, sir,” answered the student. The professor asked, “If God created everything, then God created evil, since it exists. And according to the principle that our deeds determine ourselves, then God is evil.” The student fell silent when he heard this answer. The professor was very pleased with himself. He boasted to the students that he proved once again that belief in God is a myth.

Discussion between professor and student:

Another student raised his hand and said, “May I ask you a question, professor?” “Of course,” the professor replied. The student stood up and asked, “Professor, does the cold exist?” “What’s the question? Of course it does. Have you ever been cold?” The students laughed at the young man’s question.

The young man replied, “Actually, sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we think of as cold is really the absence of heat. A person or object can be examined to see if it has or transmits energy. Absolute zero* (-460 degrees Fahrenheit) is the complete absence of heat. All matter becomes inert and unable to react at this temperature. Cold does not exist. We created this word to describe what we feel in the absence of heat.”

The student continued. “Professor, does darkness exist?” The professor replied, “Of course it does.” The student replied, “You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness also does not exist. Darkness is really the absence of light. We can study light, but not darkness. We can use Newton’s prism to split white light into many colors and explore the different wavelengths of each color.

You cannot measure darkness. A simple beam of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a space is? You measure how much light is presented. Is not it? Darkness is a concept that humans use to describe what happens in the absence of light.

Finally, the young man asked the professor, “Sir, does evil exist?” This time hesitantly, the professor replied, “Of course, as I said. We see him every day. Cruelty between people, many crimes and violence around the world. These examples are nothing but manifestations of evil.

To which the student replied, “Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist for itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is like darkness and cold, a word created by man to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not faith or love, which exist as light and heat. Evil is the result of the absence of Divine love in the human heart. It is like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the kind of darkness that comes when there is no light. The professor sat down. The student’s name was Albert Einstein.

*- explanation:  Absolute zero  is the temperature at which all components of the system have the least amount of energy allowed by the laws of QUANTUM MECHANICS; Celsius is -273.15 ° C,  Fahrenheit -459.67°  and just 0 (zero) Kelvin.
